Hirundo rustica

Barn Swallow

Swallows / Golondrinas
Aerial insectivores as a group are in steep decline and the Barn Swallow is no exception. With a decline of around 36%, the North American breeding population is in trouble. A life spent on the wing and a highly mobile nature means it is very difficult to study the stopover behavior of swallows, nonetheless, Barn Swallows concentrate in certain regions while on migration and can be seen actively foraging over suitable habitat by day. One such region is the tropical dry forest ecoregion on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, where Barn Swallows are very abundant throughout the month of April.
